Vons Employees Raise Big Bucks for Nancy Reagan Breast Center

Bill Tarter, district manager for Vons, Monica Berlin, SVH diagnostic imaging director, Sharon Schwartz, Vons employee, and Caroline Esparza, Vice President of Patient Care and Chief Nurse Executive.

The Nancy Reagan Breast Center — Simi Valley Hospital’s comprehensive mammography and breast care center — was the recent and fortunate recipient of a $44,976 donation made by big hearted Vons employees who took action to make a difference in the fight against cancer.

This year’s donation — coordinated as part of the grand reopening festivities of the Vons’ Newbury Park store — follows a very generous 2005 gift from Vons employees who raised $28,732. In all, Vons employees have raised more than $73,708 for the Nancy Reagan Breast Center.

“It’s a terrible feeling to have someone in your family die of cancer,” said Sharon Schwartz, an employee at the Moorpark Vons who presented the check with Vons District Manager Bill Tarter to hospital staff. “My mother died of bone cancer 34 years ago. It’s important for people to turn a negative into a positive or what I like to call, ‘bending it back’”

Schwartz, who is also a Moorpark resident, was instrumental in the Vons fund raising effort, her own selfless actions raising $11,000 through bake sales and one-to-one discussions with Vons customers.

“Vons employees truly have a heart,” said Monica Berlin. “All of us at the Nancy Reagan Breast Center are inspired by people like Sharon who make a difference in the health and wellbeing of our community. She inspires all of us to go that extra step in the care and services we provide to our patients.”

Berlin said that the funds raised by Vons employees would be earmarked for future equipment upgrades as part of the Nancy Reagan Breast Center’s mission to provide state-of-the-art technology in caring and compassionate environment.
