Student Art Contest Celebrates Tower Grand Opening

ArtSimi Valley and Moorpark students in grades three through 12—attending either public or private school—are invited to put their artistic skills to work by participating in an art contest that will be part of the 2008 Simi Valley Hospital Patient Care Tower grand opening festivities.

A “Healthy Family” Theme

What images come to mind when you hear the phrase “healthy family”? Perhaps it’s healthy food selections, exercise and physical activity, emotional and spiritual wellness, or participating in family activities. All entries must reflect some aspect of the “healthy family” theme in a colorful, expressive and creative manner.

Great Expectations

All artwork must be created on an 11-by-17-inch piece of paper—no exceptions. Use of copyrighted material is not permitted. Three-dimensional work will not be accepted. Artwork must not be framed, mounted or outlined with any type of border. Again, there will be no exceptions to these rules.

Drawings or paintings may be produced in crayon, watercolor, acrylic or oil paint, colored pencil, indelible marker pen, felt-tip pen, soft ballpoint pen or any similar indelible medium. The following types of art will not be accepted: computer-generated graphics, pencil, charcoal, oil crayon, chalk or collage work involving the use of photocopies.

And the Winner Is…

Contest entries will be judged by a panel of Simi Valley Hospital leadership and governing board members in three grade categories:

Category 1: grades 3 to 5
Category 2: grades 6 to 8
Category 3: grades 9 to12

Judging criteria include originality of ideas, adherence to theme, use of color and media, and overall creativity.

There will be one winner for each of the three categories, with each winner receiving a check for $300. Winning artwork selected for exhibition will become the property of Simi Valley Hospital and will be displayed in the Patient Care Tower during grand opening festivities in 2008 and afterward. Winning entries may also be viewed at the Simi Valley Hospital website.
