Community Holiday Blood Drive To Be Held December 23

Hospital officials are encouraging all eligible blood donors to give the Gift of Life this Holiday Season.

Simi Valley Hospital invites the public to give blood — the gift of life — this Holiday Season. A community blood drive will be held on Thursday, Dec. 23, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Garden Conference Room at the hospital, 2975 N. Sycamore Drive, Simi Valley.

“We all expect blood to be there for us, but a fraction of those who can give, do,” said Dhobie Wong, Blood Drive Coordinator. “Yet sooner or later, most of us will face a time of great vulnerability in which we will need blood. And that time is all too often unexpected.”

“About 10 years ago, before I knew my condition (myelofibrosis ), a co-worker urged me to donate blood,” said, Johnny Livingston (48 years-old). She said ‘you never know when you’re gonna need blood,’ and convinced me to become a blood donor. I donated every year until about a year ago when I was diagnosed with myelofibrosis,” said Livingston. “With myelofibrosis, my bone marrow doesn’t produce enough red blood cells. I need a bone marrow transplant, but for now I receive regular blood transfusions. Without this blood, I might not make it,” he continued. “I’ve had more than 30 transfusions. The blood drive on Dec. 23 is very, very important. It’s the most important thing we can do. It helps keep people like me stay alive.”

Blood donors must be healthy, at least 19 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, not have donated blood in the last 8 weeks or donated double red cells in the last 16 weeks days.

There is no upper age limit.

Donated blood will be distributed to patients at Simi Valley Hospital.

Please call (805) 955-6351 today to schedule an appointment. Participants must eat a healthy meal and drink plenty of water before donating. To schedule an appointment, or for more information, please email Dhobie Wong or call (805) 955-6351.
