The Lifeline Program: Simi Valley Hospital and Local Governments Add Resources

The local Lifeline Program is a shining example of cooperation among government, business and individuals. The senior centers in both Simi Valley and Moorpark support the program and provide funds to purchase units for low-income individuals who need the service. In addition, as a major referral source for the local Lifeline Program, the senior centers process requests from new clients.

The hospital also gets involved by raising money for the program, mostly through the efforts of the Volunteer Guild. Funds are used to help underwrite the costs to seniors who don’t qualify for free equipment, as well as to replace equipment, as needed. Simi Valley Hospital also purchased the original central monitoring unit for the Emergency Department and provides office and storage space for the program. In addition, the hospital’s discharge planners are a major referral source into the program.

In the fall of 2001, a $20,000 purchase of a new central monitoring unit in the Emergency Department was completed. The Simi Valley Council on Aging funded the purchase via a grant from the Ventura County Area Agency on Aging.

Grants and donations from the local communities throughout the existence of the local Lifeline Program have provided for the purchase, repair and upgrade of the home communicators. Donations for additional equipment and repair, as well as upgrading of existing units, are an ongoing need.
